Context
We collaborated with the SFMOMA digital team to revamp their outdated content management system (CMS). Our work was key to improving their content publication, work tracking, and overall output quality by fixing broken features and enhancing input-to-output intuitiveness, ultimately streamlining their workflows.
Surfacing high-use controls speed up workflows
We reduced user fatigue and improved efficiency by moving frequently used controls out of drop-down menus and complex, multi-click flows
Adding system rigidity enables simplicity
We streamlined the CMS to improve workflow efficiency and ensure consistent outputs. For example, in the multiple image module, image sizes are now determined automatically based on the number of images added, eliminating unnecessary control flexibility that previously led to confusion and messy outputs.
We established intuitive rules for publishing content by reworking the composition hierarchy. Previously, entering information in the CMS top-to-bottom didn't always reflect how the content would be displayed, leading to confusion. We resolved this by aligning the CMS structure with its published output.
Despite limited project scope, our work reportedly greatly improved content publication workflows for SFMOMA's team by concentrating on high-impact areas. Linking composition to expected content behavior, introducing intentional rigidity, surfacing frequently used controls, and providing visual cues to bridge the gap between user input and expected output improved the team's workflow efficiency and overall quality of life while working within the CMS.
